What Is Pelvic Floor Therapy?

Physical therapy is a medical, hands-on approach to relieving pain and restoring function. Physical therapists are medical experts in musculoskeletal and neurological conditions and work closely with physicians. Our physical therapists evaluate your movement patterns, identify the cause of your pain, and work to eliminate it.

While every patient’s condition and pain is unique, your physical therapist will use a variety of gentle hands-on techniques, exercises, and equipment to relieve pain quickly and restore your function to optimum levels. The overall goal is to restore pain-free mobility and function and to prevent the injury or pain from recurring.

    FAQ

    Where are we located?
We are located in the Professional Offices at 189 Elm Street. (Between Trader Joe’s and Stop & Shop) ).

(There is a ramp to get into the building, but you will need to go down 5 steps to get into our office. There is a lift available for clients in a wheelchair. Please notify us if you need to use the lift, so we can have someone ready to operate it.
    How do I pay?
Payment is taken up front. You may pay with a credit card, debit card, HSA card, FSA card, check, or cash.
    Where can I park?
There is plenty of parking on the street and in the municipal parking lot down the street. Metered parking is 50 cents an hour. Parking meters are in effect Monday-Saturday from 10am-6pm (unless otherwise noted.)
How long do I need to come for therapy?
The duration of your care is dependent on many things like diagnosis, severity of symptoms, length of symptoms before starting therapy, co-morbidities, compliance with exercises and recommendations. On average, our patients should expect to come for at least 6-8 visits over the course of a few months. Long-standing pelvic floor issues that have been lingering for years will likely take longer to rehab.

I am pregnant and want to be proactive. How many times do I need to come?
Our pregnant patients come in for a variety of reasons. Sometimes they come 2-3 visits to help prepare their pelvic floor for labor and delivery. Other times, there may be a weakness or pain issue that will require them to come more often throughout their second and third trimesters. We usually stop seeing our pregnant patients at 36-37 weeks unless there is a specific symptom.
What if I have my period?
Do not cancel your appointment. Many patients come in with their periods and we can defer internal treatment if you wish. It makes no difference to the practitioner. It is actually beneficial to see patients during all points of their cycle because the body (internally and externally) can be very different.
What can I expect at my first visit?
Your therapist will review your medical history, and review your current concerns and/or symptoms. A physical examination will be performed so dressing comfortably is key! Expect to learn a lot about the body as we review your examination and provide you with a verbal assessment. We will also go over your individualized plan of care including frequency of future visits. Lastly, you will be provided with a home exercise program to get started with at home.
Do I need to do an internal exam? I am worried about it.
The patient is always in control during each and every visit. If you are uncomfortable with any any intervention or assessment, the therapist will always respect your preferences.
